The Milanese Gin & Tonic – How a simple twist transformed a classic into a cultural statement
CAMPARI G&T
The Insight: A Category Ripe for Reinvention
The Gin & Tonic is the ultimate default drink. An easy call at the bar, a reliable serve at home, a mainstay of British drinking culture. In the UK alone, over 400 million Gin & Tonic serves are poured each year. It’s familiar, effortless and, whisper it, predictable.
Yet deep consumer research told us something interesting. People weren’t just drinking G&Ts out of love; they were drinking them out of habit. And habits, when the right idea comes along, are ripe for disruption.
Our research uncovered two key shifts. Firstly, consumers were searching for a way to reinvigorate their go-to drinks – seeking something that felt more dynamic, distinctive and exciting. Secondly, the UK was experiencing a full-blown love affair with Bella Italia – the effortless charm, sun-soaked style and cultural sophistication of the Dolce Vita lifestyle. Whether it was fashion, food or furniture, the allure of Milanese modernity was inescapable.
From these insights, we saw a perfect opportunity: take the established ritual of the Gin & Tonic and infuse it with the flavour, colour and charisma of Italy. The idea was simple but powerful – Campari as the essential Italian twist on the classic G&T. A single pour that transformed the ordinary into something stylish, cosmopolitan and effortlessly elevated.
