Here are the best Rolls-Royce bespoke designs
The landscape of luxury is ever-changing and the challenge for brands is to find novel ways to remain desirable. Creating a bespoke, hand-made motor car is possibly one of the pinnacles of luxury, especially when the car in question is a Rolls-Royce. Last year marked one of the busiest years for bespoke design in the marque’s 114-year history with a team of highly-skilled designers, engineers, and craftspeople working intimately together at the facility in Goodwood to bring these visions to life. Here are our top five:
Sweptail (pictured above)
The cinematic coupé honours the 1920s and 30s Rolls-Royce motor cars. The client’s vision was for a coachbuilt two-seat coupé featuring an expansive panoramic glass roof. The grille is milled from solid aluminum, the side profile defines its stately character, the rear taper is a nod to racing yachts and the registration 08 is milled from ingots of aluminum and hand-polished to a mirror finish.
Dawn Drophead Coupé
It was created as a one-off to mark the opening of the Rolls-Royce Summer Studio in Porto Cervo, on the glorious Costa Smeralda on the island of Sardinia. The theme is therefore nautical; the Porto Cervo motif, encrusted with gems – sapphires and mother of pearl – is embedded into the fascia, the navy blue and arctic white hues complement an expanse of teak on the decking and floor.
Spirit of Calligraphy Ghost
A special commission, the design references calligraphy, created here by the artist Khaled Al Saai. Words are harmoniously moulded into shapes, so text and image melt into one with Sir Henry Royce’s famous lines: ‘Take the best that exists and make it better. When it does not exist, design it’, in Arabic shaped into the Spirit of Ecstasy.
A concept introduced on the new Rolls-Royce Phantom, glass runs uninterrupted across the fascia providing the opportunity to present artwork within the motor car. It takes personalisation to a whole new level with customers being encouraged to commission and curate their own gallery in motion.
The world’s first diamond car was commissioned by a Rolls-Royce collector. The flanks of the motor car are highlighted with Mugello Red and Black twin coachlines, reflected inside with black leather seats and accents in the red, carried through the stitching on the doors and piping on the seats. The motor car is finished in a paint infused with real diamonds.
