Award-Winning Brand Campaign for Campari – Ready for Bitter? – Reimagining a Milanese Icon for a New Generation.

CAMPARI

Campari are more than a drink – they are an emblem of Milanese culture: a rich, storied brand rooted in Davide Campari’s vision of art, design and aperitivo culture. Defined by the drink’s unmistakable red hue and the brand’s iconic logo, Campari are an expression of boldness, style, and sophistication. Yet in the UK, the legendary bitter drink had lost its allure, and so had the brand.

Years of stagnation had left Campari tethered to outdated perceptions – linked to 1980s and 90s advertising, with little resonance among a younger audience. Consumer insights revealed a startling gap: many younger drinkers were unaware of Campari’s origins or its role in modern mixology, with some assuming the drink was consumed neat in a pint glass.

However, a cultural shift was underway. The rise of the Negroni cocktail – with its strong equity among bartenders and influencers – presented a clear opportunity. A new generation of urban consumers, drawn to complex, bitter flavour profiles, were seeking drinks that matched and reflected their sophisticated palates. The challenge was to enable Campari to reclaim their heritage, redefine their relevance, and resonate with today’s tastemakers. This is where Spinach Branding stepped in.

Spinach Branding was tasked with transforming Campari UK’s positioning and identity through a new omnichannel campaign aimed at urban professionals aged 25–40. This is an audacious, style-conscious audience who thrives on creativity and seeks out new experiences. They’re drawn to premium gin, classic cocktails and brands that elevate their social identity.

Our challenge:

  • Reignite Campari’s emotional connection with its heritage in the arts, Milanese culture and design.
  • Develop a UK-specific brand platform and campaign strategy to educate, engage and inspire.
  • Create a contemporary visual identity that resonates with modern consumers while honouring the brand’s storied past.
  • Leverage omnichannel touchpoints to establish Campari as the ultimate choice for bitters and aperitivo moments.

Every project we undertake at Spinach Branding is rooted in understanding the unique challenges and opportunities our clients face. For Campari, this began with immersing ourselves in their essence, both past and present.

Unearthing Insights

Our research journey spanned continents. In the UK, we delved into the lives of Campari’s target consumers through focus groups, quantitative surveys and influencer interviews. This uncovered two critical insights:

  • Style as identity: Campari’s target audience see themselves as tastemakers within their peer groups, drawn to brands that reflect and elevate their sense of sophistication.
  • A mature palate: As they moved beyond sweeter drink profiles, this audience began to embrace the complexity of bitter flavours – finding them both distinctive and rewarding.

Meanwhile, in Milan our team immersed themselves in the world of Campari – from its archives at the Sesto San Giovanni HQ to the vibrant role it has played in Milanese society. And it was the brand’s deep ties to the arts, fashion and design – including collaborations with icons such as Leonetto Cappiello, Fortunato Depero and Federico Fellini – that helped shape our creative approach.

Defining the Brand Platform

From these insights, we crafted a bold brand platform, “La Vita Campari”. It embodied the essence of Milanese sophistication and aperitivo culture, weaving together the brand’s artistic heritage, iconic assets and a modern, aspirational lifestyle.

Creating the Big Idea

We introduced “Ready for Bitter?”, a rallying cry for a generation ready to embrace Campari’s boldness. This concept captured both the attitudinal edge of our audience and the essence of the product’s distinctive taste.

With “La Vita Campari” and “Ready for Bitter?” as our foundation, we built a cohesive omnichannel campaign:

  • Authentic Art Direction: We partnered with renowned cocktail photographer Rob Lawson to capture Campari’s key serves (Negroni, Sbagliato and The Milanese G&T) styled with Milanese flair and irresistible quench appeal.
  • Lifestyle Photography: Bespoke visuals from Milan’s streets, bars and restaurants immersed consumers in the Campari world.
  • Omnichannel Activation: The campaign spanned OOH billboards, nationwide print, digital ads, social media and targeted bar activations.
  • Social Media Assets: A curated library of videos and photography emphasised sophistication, style and the art of the aperitivo moment.

The campaign was a resounding success, revitalising Campari’s presence in the UK and cementing its relevance with a new generation:

  • Brand Metrics: Brand appeal and recommendation grew by 10%.
  • Social Media Impact: Instagram posts achieved over 6.8 million impressions, with over 700,000 engagements. Completed video views were eight times the industry norm.
  • Sales Growth: Sales of Campari Bitter surged by 27.9%.
  • Industry Recognition: Nielsen lauded it as “one of the most successful campaigns we had seen.”

“La Vita Campari” and “Ready for Bitter?” redefined Campari for a contemporary audience, connecting the brand’s timeless essence with modern sophistication. For the UK’s urban tastemakers, Campari are no longer just a drink’s brand – this is a lifestyle statement, an invitation to embrace boldness, and a celebration of Milanese art and culture.
